Jimmy Suazo tribute and the messy aftermath

11/08/04
By: Jerry Castro
Hondurasnewyork.com has published a report about the messy battle that is taking place after a group of Garifuna artists in New York joined hands to pay tribute to one of its comrades, the late Jimmy Suazo.

According to the report, Carolina Herrera, who is sister of Jimmy Suazo, accused J. King of abusing the name of the late artist to gain credit for himself, insisting that J. King had promised to "raise money to care for the Mr. Suazo's family".

Late this afternoon I have been contacting J. King and Gadu Nunez whom are the architects of the event. And according to Mr. Nunez, the event was packed due to the fact that many people did not pay to go to the event and "the reason why they did not raise a lot of money is because the lack of promotion."

This is an ongoing problem among the Garifuna community, especially in New York. The event would not happened if not for the effort and personal time investment people like Mr. King and the artists put to make this event happen. It is a shame that families would rely on the name of an icon for monetary gain, like in this case no one paid attention to the costs an event with this magnitude carries, which totaled up to $2040.00.

Everyone has praised the event as a successful and looking forward to the next time.....

But with aftermath such as this, I would rather play the CD's and avoid such accounts because I have no time to put up with people's bull or babysit adults with tantrums.

Jimmy Suazo was a Garifuna musician with no boundaries who helped those who needed the help by investing his time and resources.

For this to happen promotes the forecast of selfishness, ignorance and incompetence from the family, for not taking in stride on what their son meant to us and what he has become to the world.

And since money was raised and given to the family, what are the plans: would there be a Jimmy Suazo Fund? a Jimmy Suazo Youth Institute? A Jimmy Suazo Collaborative?

What's the fuss all about?
